Messi, Ronaldo and Van Dijk compete for FIFA's The Best 2019 award

FIFA today revealed a shortlist of eight of the 11 The Best 2019 awards that will be announced on September 23 in Milan. And as expected, defenders Virgil van Dijk, Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the three candidates for the Best Player category in 2019.

Just 3 weeks before the winner was announced, 8 out of 11 categories of The Best 2019 were FIFA revealed a shortlist of 3 people. At the center of The Best's attention was always the Best Male Player with the trio of Virgil van Dijk, Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo being the outstanding individuals.

Liverpool's Dutch center-back, who has won the Champions League Player of the Year award, will still be a good candidate after a brilliant season that won him the Champions League trophy at the hands of coach Jurgen Klopp.

Leo Messi, meanwhile, failed to gain European glory after being knocked out of the Champions League semi-final, but eventually conquered LaLiga and scored 51 goals in 50 matches (in addition to 19 assists). He is also very assertive in Copa America, although Brazil eliminated Argentina in the semi-finals.

Cristiano Ronaldo is still one of the best, although he doesn't have as many advantages as in previous years. His season at club level was not rich in goals (28 goals in 43 matches), but he won Serie A, the Italian Super Cup and also won the Nations League with the Portuguese team.

Finally, in the FIFA Fan Awards, the nominee was a Palmeiras fan named Silvia Grecco, the Dutch women's team fans and Justo Sanchez, a fan of Rampla.
